Confetti are the fruit of an antique tradition,
the first finding on the use of confetti for celebrating weddings, goes back to
the year 447 A.D.,
in fact we find this mentioned in scripts regarding the rich Roman family
“Fabi”. This tradition therefore, was
created by the Romans, who celebrated reunions and births with the use of
confetti, obviously the confetti of those days were not produced with the same
ingredients, in fact, instead of sugar they used honey.
From the year 1500, confetti became the ideal
conclusion of every big expensive get-together of high prestige and it was in
fact a common procedure to offer the confetti to the most illustrated guests.
Confetti have always been considered very
auspicious, in the past centuries they were the most prestigious sweets and
therefore were reserved for the important ceremonies, like the higher rank
weddings.
In general, the tradition has it that the confetti
are placed in a separate bag inside the confetti box with the number of confetti ranging from 3 to 5;
usually in the event of a wedding, the number of confetti chosen is 5 for it’s
symbolic reason, happiness, wealth, longevity, fertility and health.
Generally, each event is associated with
confetti of a different colour: Baptism (blue or pink), holy communion and
confirmation (white), university degree (red), marriage (white), anniversary (gold,
silver, etc, depending on the anniversary that is celebrated).
The classic confetti for a wedding is an almond
in white sugared coating: this symbolizes the union of the couple (the two
halves are held together by the almond).
Nowadays, things are forever
changing, so now the couple can indulge themselves into all the different
solutions as there are endless alternatives: confetti covered with white
chocolate, filled with fruit, coffee, various liquors, hazelnuts, pistachios,
mixed spices, etc..
